To Know You Is To Love You: Demonstrating Character in College Admissions

☑️ Everyone knows the first hurdle to college acceptance is academic preparation found in the rigor and performance in the high school courses you choose. But do you know the next most important factor for getting in?

➡️ Character ⬅️

Character isn’t something you simply list on your college application like another club or activity. It’s an intangible developed over time, based on the experiences you choose and the ones that choose you. It’s crafted and honed intentionally and by necessity.

When Admissions Officers name “positive character traits” as the next important factor after academic preparation in NACAC’s State of College Admissions survey, what exactly do they mean? How do they identify character in a student’s file?

This is a presentation for everyone: 9th graders with college in the distance to 12th graders rushing to hit application deadlines. And everyone in between, including and especially, those of us parents, counselors, and others who support our students in their successful transition to college and adulthood.

Along with themes below, we will include a Q&A session at the end of the presentation:

☑️ Research and trends on character assessment in college admissions

☑️ Examining college fit based on students’ personal values & character traits

☑️ Tips for assessing and demonstrating character in the application process for students and their recommenders
